Intersex or DSD is a condition in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that does seem to fit the typical definition of female or male or a person born with genitals that lie between male and female or what are medically referred to DISORDERS of SEX DEVELOPMENT. For many it is at chromosomal level, for others, it is at hormonal level and the most obvious ones, is at genital level. Many intersex infants are born with ambiguous sex characteristics and cannot be clearly classified as either male or female.

What is the difference between hermaphrodite and intersex?

Hermaphrodite was a term that was commonly used in past to describe intersex people. The term is often used negatively and many intersex activists feels it is dehumanizing.
Hermaphrodites are depicted as people with both male and female sex organs. Intersex is used since it less stigmatizing compared to hermaphrodite.

What is the difference between intersex and transgender?

Intersex are people whose bodies, reproductive systems, chromosomes and/or hormones cannot be easily characterized as male or female known as (ATYPICAL SEX ) while transgender are people who are born biologically male or female (TYPICAL SEX) but feel their brains are not congruent with the body they were born.

How common is DSD or intersexuality in Kenya?

It is believed that the occurrence or incidences of intersex in Kenya are more common than generally acknowledged. However formal research is in the process for definite statistics.

How does it happen?

DSD or intersexuality is be caused by varieties of biological process and often doctors cannot tell the reasons why one is born intersex.

Can`t doctors just test to find out baby`s true sex?

There is NO true sex. However genetic tests may be carried to determine what gender the intersex persons are likely to feel most in comfortable.
Genital surgeries are irreversible and cuts of choices hence important to avoid unless it is medical emergency.

How is DSD or Intersexuality normally dealt with?

When an intersex child is born, the birth is treated as secret and isolates the child from general public. In most cases the mothers of such a child is always frowned upon and usually superstitions loom large as families consult medium, traditional healers, and witch doctors for a solution. In some cultures, intersex children are killed and never allowed to grow up to be adults. Women who give birth to intersex children are either considered to be witches or victims of witchcraft who carries bad omen. Many women are abandoned by their husbands and in-laws dues to news of such birth. Most mothers of intersex children dump and abandon their children in the streets.
In developed countries these surgeries have been abolished to infants, since they are meant for cosmetic reasons and not for therapeutic purposes. These surgeries cannot be reversed when children’s rights are violated.
